Good to know! How much do you tip? I will call the camp. It is this one counselor in particular that I just think deserves a little appreciation tip. He was fantastic with our son. His letters were incredibly informative. Also, He is in college here but is from New Zealand. He didnt get to go home for the summer.

DD's counselor was good but not outstanding in any way. DS's was just truly exceptional, and I say this as someone who went to sleep away camp for over 10 years as a kid/teenager.

$10-$20 week for the number of weeks the kids are there.

Both the camps my kids go to say absolutely no tipping and we have never tipped.

This is ridiculous. You don't have to tip everyone, folks.

Kids not at sleep away, just day camp. Counselors are fantastic. I don't tip but do give gift cards.

For real? I can barely afford camp, much less a tip.

If you can barely afford camp don't send your kid to one.

If camp was in Dec and not the summer would the non tippers feel the same way?

Most people 2 working parents don't have a choice about sending kids to camp in the summer.

Seriously? You think that only kids whose parents don't have problems paying for camp should be allowed to go?! That is one of the most arrogant, disrespectful and low-class things I've ever heard (and this is from someone who has no problem paying for my kids' camp...). Please let me know what camp your kids attend so that I can make sure I don't send my kids there. I wouldn't want them to be around yours who are being raised to look down upon people!

Also, please - no tipping.

My parents always tipped the overnight counselors well, even though we weren't nearly as well off as the other camp families. These are college kids. They need the money!

Exactly. It's day care.

How many hours a day do they work? Do they get minimum wage? The overnight counselors get room and board, too right? I don't think your typical college student is coming away from th summer poor.

Sleepaway camp is not day care. The counselors are up with the kids at 7. They are leading activities all day (swimming, athletics, boating etc) They lead and participate in night activities till 9 pm.

If you think 14 hours of camp per day is day care ok. But not in my book.

Typically a sleep away counselors work 14 hours per day including weekends. They get one day off per week. At our camp, they have to do they laundry since they cannot put their's in with the kids. If they do a specialty such as lead water activities, tennis etc. they will be paid more. They usually get paid per week, not per hour. The average salary is $300/week. Yes they get room and board but no sleep away counselor is coming away rich considering how much they work.

That is why so many counselors are from Europe. The american kids don't want the jobs. The Europeans use it to get here free so they can travel around the US after the summer is over.
