At the very, very least the parents should know full well that masturbating in public (including movie theaters) is indecent exposure and a citation will be given. It's also a way to end up on the lower ranks of the sex offender list - whipping out your willy in a movie theater? Come on.

I'm going to go with . . . STAY OUT OF IT. it sounds like you think you have an unreliable source, and the story indeed doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. And MIL already broached it with them; so it's not as if they're not on notice that she thinks she saw such a thing. You don't have anything to add since you're not a witness. Depending on their relationship, your husband MIGHT be able to broach the subject in an "oh god, our mom is crazy; listen to this thing she told me. What really happened?" kind of way. BUT this is your nephew . . . keep your eyes and ears open for problems.

I favor this approach. MIL's story is so freaking crazy I would just want to know what the heck really happened.

I don't see any harm with DH telling his brother that MIL claims his son was masturbating in public. Dh doesn't have to say he buys the story or anything like that. But the parents should know.

How does a 10 year old "masturbate to completion" in the sense that an old lady can see but no one else in the theater notices? Not one kid or other mother or parent? Sorry, I don't buy this story.

as a mom of three boys-including a ten year old-they often have their hands in their pants and I have to gently remind them that now is not a good time. Granted I see this behavior rarely now with my ten year old but I have noticed that especially at night before bed if he is watching something he is often "holding" himself. If this is true, perhaps the public aspect needs to be addressed but I don't know seems blown out of proportion.

It is totally normal for a 10 y/o boy to masturbate, and they cannot do it to completion, at least not in the adult form. A discussion with him about appropriateness in definitely in order, but it doesn't sound like your BIL will have anything to do with that. Your DH, if he's close with his nephew, could have this conversation with him.

It is not normal for a 10 year old boy to masturbate "to completion" while sitting next to his grandmother in a movie theater. It is also not normal for a grandmother to notice inappropriate behavior like that in her grandchild and do nothing to stop it at the time.

That is why the story makes no sense. At all.
