Severe sunburns in the past is actually a risk factor for developing skin cancer later on.

OP, I wouldn't make it a habit for your kids no matter what their skin color. Here's some good tips on avoiding too much sun:

Ugh. I reapply 30 SPF to my son once every hour and he is still very dark tan. He swims for hours daily. I'm not sure what else to do. He's never burned, but you are right, any color is damage.

Is he wearing a long-sleeve rash guard and long swim shorts?
