They definitely exist.

OP - I would just make sure your children know what is actually behind the vegetarian teachings in Hinduism. I'd pull out some quotes from the Gita and tell the children it's important to go to the original source of holy teachings, not just listen to what anyone and everyone tells you about it.

When your MIL declines an invitation because you've had meat recently, just say "Sorry you can't make it" and end the conversation. She's free to do what she feels she needs to and you're free to cook how you please in your kitchen. When she's ready, she'll come over and either she'll eat with you or she won't.

+1. And if she just can't help herself when it comes to telling your children how to eat, then limit their contact with her. Having a good relationship with a wonderful grandmother is one thing, having a relationship with someone who will cause trouble with your own relationship with your kids is another.

I have never seen a healthy looking vegetarian. They all think they look great. But their color is always really off in a creepy sort of way.

Like, what color are they? Are they turning green because of eating too much kale? Pasty white because of eating too much tofu?

There's nothing like a piece of fresh, all natural, antibiotic, hormone free venison. One of my relatives hunts and gives us a few packets of cutlets every winter. It's better than anything the supermarket sells and a lot leaner than beef. Same goes for buffalo. Native Americans ate both for thousands of years and they have a tremendous amount of respect for nature. Are we going to say they've got it all wrong?

No, I'm saying avoiding meat is healthier. The fuck are you prattling on about Indians and respect for nature for?

Eat some protein, you'll be in a better mood. Feeling hungry all the time makes one pretty short-fused.

This. Unless becoming a vegetarian is in your culture/race and your people have spent centuries adapting to a vegetarian lifestyle, be very careful.

I'm not the short-fused vegetarian, but a basic understanding of nutrition would tell you that protein comes from a lot of places and there are many ways to not feel hungry all the time that don't involve eating meat.

Also, please tell me you are not conflating American Indians and people from India, the country?

It should not come as news to you that some people are prettier than others. It's also pretty easy to find a less crappy picture of Gillian McKeith out there, though the truth remains that Nigella Lawson is a beautiful woman.

I know a lot of people who eat a ton of meat, butter, chocolate, desserts and wine who look terrible.

Of course not

I'm just considering that (at least modern) human beings have walked the earth for 60K+ years and many archeological sites have evidence of meat-eating i.e. pits containing the bones of antelope and mammoth. That diet is what got us this far. Why fix what isn't broken? Vegetarianism is a practice people take on for various reasons that do not include survival, unless you have very high cholesterol or other health isses. It's a practice people often take on for ideological/cultural reasons, similar to circumcision. OP's MIL needs a real health-related reason to tell her grandchildren not to eat meat such as it's toxic or improperly cooked. Would be nice if a pediatrician could advise here on the benefits/dangers of cutting meat out of a child's diet completely. Otherwise, why work so hard at cutting it out other than to prove a point or develop unique habits?

He probably doesn't say anything because he's a big mama's boy like most Indian guys. lol

Who have girlfriends on the side!

McKeith is a blond and Gilliam a brunette. Light skinned blonds tend to age quicker than brunette s especially if they have had a lot of sun exposure. Photo aging...

Isn't it amazing how there are no "My MIL/FIL/BIL/SIL is Fabulous" thread? All we see are my *IL is driving me nuts. When will ILs learn to stand back and let a couple breathe?

have your MIL over for a "vegetarian" meal and be sure to sprinkle some beef broth on her tofu

I'm a long-time vegetarian who agrees with this poster. Sorry you're going through this; I've experienced this from the other side with a dyed-in-the-wool meat-eating Midwestern MIL. Either way, it stinks.
