If both of you work how do you handle after school activities/aftercare

We did this initially, but we found it is quite difficult to find someone reliable - they have exams, vacations, some are pretty flakey. So eventually we ended up paying more for a regular sitter.
it would work best if you have the flexibility to do pick up occasionally if they student can't do it.
