i agree about the smell of pineapple. when they're not ripe, they smell woody.

this might be obvious too, but asparagus "leaves" at the tip should be tightly packed for optimum freshness.

for juicier limes & lemons, pick the heaviest ones. especially if they're heavier than they look.

i've also found that the best apples are the ones that have not been waxed to a glossy sheen. you can't hardly find these in normal grocery stores, but it makes all the difference not to have that waxy stuff on the peel.

How do you go about picking sweet cantaloupe and honeydew when they aren't ripe? They're generally quite green when they're sold.
