NP here. I'm curious what your son's height is now...and if you can remember, what it was at 3. You and your husband share the exact same stats as my husband and I do. So far, my 3 year old (who is tall, but not off the charts tall- 95th percentile) is supposed to be 6'2" at 18. DH's dad was a big 6'2" and while his brothers are shorter than my husband, they make enormous sons. |

There is regression to the mean, so a tall mother might have a shorter son. There is a formula that pediatricians use to guess adult height, and it does vary by gender.
I think with boys it's the average of father's height and mother's height plus 2 inches and with girls it's the average of mother's height and father's height minus 2 inches. So two 6 feet parents would be projected to have a 6'1" son and a 5'11" daughter. |
| OP my brother and I have 9yo boys who are about 3 months apart in age. My SIL and I are about the same height (5'3"); my brother and my husband are about the same height (6'/6'1"). My 9yo has never dipped below 90 percentile for height; as a third grader he is taller than many if not most of the 6th graders at his school. My nephew is at the opposite end of the spectrum; last I heard he was about 3 percentile for height, and isn't much taller than my 4yo (who is crazy tall like his brother). Fwiw, both cousins are happy, healthy, reasonably well-adjusted rising 4th graders, and I'm pretty sure my tall kid is less athletically inclined and more prone to getting teased at school than his tiny cousin. |
| I am 5'9". My DS is 5'6" and is projected to be around 5'8" but not sure that will happen. So unfortunately for him we don't fit the mold. |
Interesting, but this means nothing until they are both adults. My brothers are 6'3" and they were always the smallest at school, until they shot up at around 16. Your nephew may well end up taller than your son. |
how old is he? Boys keep often keep growing until 19 or 20. |
Give him a chance! It's still just a projection. |

On Thursdays, I like to base my world view on sitcoms. In sitcom families, sons almost always grow up to be shorter than the moms.
|
| My mom is 5"0 my dad is 6"2, I am 5"2 (female) my brother is 5"3. So my brother is taller than my mom, but almost a foot shorter than my dad. There is no dominance or recessives when it comes to genes that code for height, so it can always go either way, especially in "mixed" height marriages. BTW there are literally hundreds of genes that influence height and there are even more variants of those genes. |
| My mom was 5ft6 and my brother is 5ft5. My mom is now about 5ft with shrinking and hunching that's come with age. |
Shrinking and hunching typically means people lose about 1-2 inches. How has your mother shrunk 6"? |
Almost 18. Still hoping for the growth spurt. |
| ALWAYS? there have been what, 10 billion humans alive in history? Your friend thinks a word like ALWAYS applies to a group like that? There has to be a way to make money off such an innumerate person. |
I like you. |
It's hard to tell since she's always leaning on her cane. If we stretched her out maybe she's taller but as it stands she's shorter than I am at 5ft2. |
