I have a kid entering K in the fall.
Do the teachers really give out candy for right answers? That is the craziest thing I've heard. |
We read all the time here on DCUM about kids who are picky. I wouldn't assume that because some kids won't eat something or describe it as gross, that it's bad. My child's school has free water. Does your school really not have water fountains? I'd definitely complain about that. |
True that some kids are picky eaters. But I could also look at and smell the food and it both looked and smelled unappetizing. Please note that I didn't mention water at all. While water is very important during the day, water isn't lunch. |
My kids might recevie on occaisional candy treat from a teacher but certainly not for every correct answer. Less than 1 time per week. People in my office bring in an occaissional treat too. Its ok. My son never buys lunch because he is a huge eater (though very thin) and just the lunch was never enough. He would ask for additional fruit/and snacks to go with it. |
Yes! My advice: make an issue of it immediately! |
There's also the larger issue of the very limited outdoor time and physical activity at the elementary schools. Recess is only once a day, lunch is indoors, and for my child, PE is always indoors because it's at the same time as recess. So our kids are sitting on their rears almost the entire day. Talk about unhealthy. I make my child's lunch but what can I do to increase their activity level and outdoor time at school? Of course, I do agree that whole foods should be served in the cafeteria, too. |
www.realfoodforkidsmontgomery.org Please join Real Food for Kids - Montgomery at Dawson's Market, Rockville Town Square, Saturday, June 29 from 4-6 pm for an informal meeting and discussion of school food in MCPS. We are looking for at least one parent from each of the 202 schools in the county to share their expertise and passion for this issue, and who would be willing to work on a variety of topics including but not limited to: bringing fresh, local produce into the schools; opting out of school snacks; teachers rewarding children with food; free water in the cafeteria; sugar in the schools; vending machines; and processed food. If you are part of a wellness committee in your school, or just a lone crusader, please consider joining us. To voice your support and join our mailing list, please email us at RealFoodMCPS@ gmail.com or call 301-202-4812. Thank you! |
This is absolutely true. Many people would be shocked to learn about it, but MCPS (and most other districts) expects foodservice to cover its costs and generate additional income. They do this by selling junk to your children. |
Are the cafeteria workers employed by MCPS or the catering company?
They are so mean and just scream at the little 5 and 6 year old kids while they put in their codes (ridiculously time consuming process). Can we get civilized cafeteria staff too? |
