Two braids on grown women: Yay or Nay?

Two braids is tricky to pull off. You can't make them too long, and you have to the clothes to match (i.e. don't try it with a suit! But maybe with a graphic tee and jeans on the weekend).

One braid can work: http://www.glamour.com/beauty/blogs/girls-in-the-beauty-department/2010/02/17/0217-joanna_hillman_bd.jpg

I like to do a low, somewhat messy single braid pulled to the side, or a low messy bun. My hair is very fine so I tease the roots a bit first.

Depends what u look like. If you have blonde hair and look like st Pauli girl it's definately good .

^ yes. If you're not the St Pauli Girl, I'd avoid.

Well, Gail Davis did it back in the 50's when she was Annie Oakley on TV . . . if that tells you anything!

I am 36, and have hair that goes maybe an inch or two past my shoulders. I do pigtail braids sometimes. I think it looks good, and don't really care what anyone else thinks.

However, I wouldn't wear it that way to work. Unless I worked in a creative environment or a school. Stupid law firms ....

Clearly, because it looks rrreeaaalllly bad on anyone over 12, except for aforementioned Annie Oakley, Swiss Miss.

Um . . . don't think a school would be the appropriate environment for 2 braids on a 36 year old. Sorry.

The problem is hairstyles with my hair pulled straight back (buns, ponytails, etc.) only accentuate my thin spots (thanks, kids!) so low and loose is better. I'll keep experimenting or just chop it off. And I think my husband would laugh his ass off if I showed up for "sexy time" with braids

Is your hair long enough for a side braid or side bun? It can take some product to keep it all together, but is more age-appropriate than two braids (although I will do two braids when wearing a helmet biking or skiing) and softer than a standard ponytail.

If you are considering two braids, how about french braiding the top on both sides into a single braid or twist in the back?

You might also need to become familiar with back-combing (aka ratting) your hair to give it a little volume and hide the thinner spots.

Gloss treatments supposedly plump your hair, too.
