How do religious based schools justify $35k tuition?

Very few Catholic high schools in the ADW get "subsidies" from the Catholic church.

Most parochial schools seem to have beautiful, large buildings on church grounds. Unless they are paying market rent they are indeed being subsidized.

I think an important question is how the denomination views the school. If they see it as an opportunity for evangelism, or an obligation for members then they are much more likely to subsidize.

This is true for K-8 but not for most high schools.

I think at minimum the Catholic ADW high schools receive subsidies in the form of tuition assistance for some students via the Archdiocese. Maybe that is reflected in the lower costs for the ADW schools.

The DC government also provides scholarships to ADW schools. Would you say the DC government subsidizes Catholic schools?

Didn't President Obama and the Democrats in Congress block the scholarships? I think they are being phased out in favor of charter schools.

No, because those scholarships can be applied to any private, not just Catholic schools. The ADW aid only benefits the Catholic high schools in the archdiocese which likely keeps costs somewhat lower for those schools because they are not bearing the full burden of each financial aid package like a Sidwell or something.

I was thinking more of ES and MS.

In DC for HS most the tuition assistance is from endowments not the ADW. ADW does provide more assistance and support to LS and MS. That is why the ES are parochial and the HSs are Independent (from the standpoint of the government/taxes).

I wonder why Sidwell does not have more endowments to keep cost low. (or STA, etc) If they have such notable graduates why don't those graduates support the community?

It is true for most ES and MS (which mostly are housed together) ADW fully funds many DC schools for children that can afford tuition as well as tuition assistance to schools that are not fully funded.

As a former administrator in a Catholic HS I can tell you this isn't really true. The ADW high schools have to pay into the pot from which the tuition assistance is granted, so that basically turns out to be a wash for them. The truth is that financially speaking, the Catholic high schools are just as "independent" as any other private school - they set their own tuition, have their own budgets, do their own fundraising, and do not receive any money from the Archdiocese (though they do have to pay the Archdiocese a little bit every year). The only exception is Archbishop Carroll which is owned and operated by the Archdiocese.

Interesting, 13:22. Why are they so much cheaper than many of the other private schools?

The question I have are why are the others so expensive. Like Prep, it does not need to be that expensive.
