It wouldn't hurt to call your contact back after 2 or three weeks, but yes, it's usually a few months (not weeks) between interviewing and hearing back for a federal job.

I interviewed in January and got an offer in mid-April, and was told that the process was extremely fast for my hire. And it was only one round of interviews.

Don't hesitate to follow-up. I did every two weeks, IIRC. As long as you're pleasant and polite, I don't think the HR people will mind. It's not like they don't realize that people are anxious and the process is slow.
