It doesn't have to be North Dakota to need a coat in the car.

Maybe those people are educated about proper carseat usage and don't risk their kids safety in a giant urban area when in a vehicle. I simply cannot understand the concept of disregarding safety standards and reccomendations put forth by people who have done crash studies. I used to be an EMT and after what the images that I've seen (that would probably makes you lose your lunch) I would NEVER put my child's safety on the road in jeopardy over their comfort, I just simply warm the car first. I don't know ONE SINGLE EMT or ER worker who would not buckle their children in properly. The biggest danger to all of us in our everyday lives is being on the road. Its easy, just follow the rules, why risk it?

I find that the less bulkier Land's End/LL Bean type coats are fine in the carseats. It's the puffy jackets and thicker other coats that interfere with the fit.

I'm from Chicago and my 13 year grew up there as a baby. We always had to park down the street from our house. We NEVER buckled him in with the coat on and that was over ten years ago. Don't do it. Buy a blanket, warm the car, use a bundle me. Seriously.

OP here... thanks for the suggestions. DS has one of those big, bulky coats, so I'll see if I can get him something slimmer. I definitely don't want to put him danger. at the same time, I don't want him to freeze!

about those bundle me blankets... do they make large ones? the one I have only goes to 12 months. plus DS is on the tall side, so he couldn't use it that long.

I have seen Bundle Me for toddlers.

Regarding this comment:
Our car seat installers told us that Bundle Me was not safe in the carseat. Too bad, because they look so nice and warm. I guess we will just use ours for walks in the stroller.

I've read and seen that the Bundle Me was fine for a carseat -- anyone have more info on this?

I don't know. The fire dept installed our carseats and we bring the seats there for check ups from time to time. They always mention no coats or bulky clothing, so I just warm the car up in advance. I would take that as a no to Bundle Me.

I'm from Maine and its just a known fact there that you don't put a baby with a coat on in a carseat, so this is probably why you don't see excessive fatailties/injuries as it compares to the rest of the country-they are following the safety reccomendations.

Also, we drive with the heat on. I would suppose when the car reaches about 70 degrees the baby would get REALLY hot being stuffed into a carseat with a coat on. That would be very uncomfortable. Are posters driving with the windows down in January or something?

But dont' Bundle Mes go OVER the entire carseat? I don't see how that would interfere with the straps fitting properly.

This product is a GREAT solution and perfect for DC winters:

www.carseatponcho.com

It doesn't bunch up under the harness, and your child can wear it in AND out of the car seat (so you don't have to take it off/put it on, or carry extra blankets).

hth!

Don't forget the hat! I use the same coat-on-backwards trick in the car, but make sure that DS is wearing a hat. That keeps him reasonably comfy for the minute that it takes to take the coat off, strap him in and re-cover him with the coat.
