Anyone here leave their private school for a highly gifted center program and regret it?

Don't switch. Stay in private. I have a kid in HGC -- which has been wonderful for him -- but have to start the damn application process again next Fall. If your kid is happy and it is a good fit, DON"T MOVE.

Many - not all -- at HGC (mine included) moved because home school was not a good fit/social issues/etc. HGC is good for my kid because it is a good fit. If I had a good fit at home school, we would have stayed.

I think what PP says works for many situations. We did not have DD apply for magnet in middle school because she LOVES her private. We may reconsider magnet for high school.

Why move? MCPS has many limitations in general. I don't have a child in a HGC but my child in MS is suffering from a totally non-intellectural curriculum in general ed and it was my understanding that the curric is similar if not the same for HGC, just that gifted go deeper or something like that. if I feel if it aint broke don't fix it.

I would never be at Barnsley as a home school and risk getting out of the program in 6th and not having private. Reapplying everywhere would be a PIA.

I would stick with private. Barnsley is not a school I would want to send my private school kid too. HGC or not.

What are you talking about?

Barnsley would not become your home school because you attend the HGC. You would be eligible to attend whatever your neighborhood middle is. About 50% of the kids go back to their home schools for middle school. My child had a good experience at Barnsley HGC (though I can't compare it to your private situation of course). Since PP did not provide any details about her concerns/issues with Barnsley so it is hard to know where she is coming from. I guess it depends on your reasons for choosing private to start with and how important the tution dollars are to you. I am guessing the kids at the HGCs representing the top 2-3% of MCPS kids would be hard to replicate at most private schools though.

We did. Private was MUCH better, but also much more expensive. Not loving public after private.

PP did not explain why PP would not send PP's child to Barnsley.

HCG does not represent the top percentages of the class. Many kids do not go or even test as the ridiculous long day and transportation makes parents wait until Magnet. Many kids want to not leave peers either. Then you have the kids teachers recommend to get them out of their school. My child child left after one year of HCG. It is not what it is cracked up to be. I would never leave private for HCG unless you were unhappy to begin with.

Wow..sorry I missed a sentence 10+ posts back but I don't think there was anything "mouthy" about the response. Poster made lots of strong statements about the school with nothing to support them. At our home school the kids that went to Barnsley were the top of the class. They were always grouped together as the highest reading and math groups. They were all accepted and went. It was a positive for them.

HGC. Not HCG. I'm sorry it didn't work out for your child.

Which just shows that 50% are not in the top of their class and can not get into Magnet. This is another reason the OP should not leave private. She obviously felt Barnsley was not a good fit for k-3rd. So why risk the chance of going to their middle school if they do not get accepted to Magnet after HGC. More people apply and want Magnet than HGC and parents are shocked when they realize their kids weren't the most desirable. If I had the money for private and lived in the Barnsley neighborhood, I would never go public. But that is just my opinion.
