Not op here, but I tried looking up random dates in June and it seems to be running over $230/night for just 1 double bed. Seems it's more than what OP wants to spend...

What would you think of staying at the YMCA?

If you share a bath, you can get a triple room for $169/night or a quad room for $179...they do have some options for private baths as well, but it will cost more

Don't focus on what a friend paid on March unless you're planning a trip in March. Double/doubles are much rarer in NYC than one-bed rooms, and the price can really climb.

The Tryp is very well priced and brand new. I believe Wyndham owns it. I would definitely stay there again.
