Feeling a bit depressed...

I quickly checked vcu and thought it had April 1 as app deadline.

No April 1 is the deadline for VCU to notify admitted students, though they are still accepting applications, space permitted.

NP here...JMU has just notified their regular decision applicants, and with a 3.0 GPA, it's unlikely OP's DD would have been accepted anyway.

OP here. My DD wants a diverse student body which I can appreciate, but that limits the OOS schools that would want to offer more money to attend. So, even if accepted, no JMU.

I agree that JMU would not work for numerous reasons. But I'd still try for VCU and UMBC.

I love how it's all about what the kid wants. The kid could have easily had what SHE wanted if she bothered to apply herself. I wouldnt accrue debt in this situation,,..who is to say she will magically buckle down and try while away at school? Not very likely. I would tell my kid to do a semester or two at MC, and get high grades so she could easily transfer to umcp. And I would only offer to foot the on campus tuition if she proved that she was committed to doing well. No free rides for my kids.

OP, this is not a direct response to your original post, but I thought I would let you know about the experience of my friend. Her daughter is a freshman at a college near where they live. Last year - the daughter's senior year - was miserable. There was a lot of tension between mother and daughter. The daughter is very smart but seemed to do everything possible to show that she would not follow ber mother's path (a very successful professional). She ended up living away from home even though she is going to a local college. My friend says their relationship is greatly improved and that her daughter just needed to "fly the coop" as you say.

Hi OP, I"m sorry if I am remembering incorrectly, but your daughter had originally wanted to go into a pre-nursing program but did not get in, correct? I am an RN and would like to give you my input that most people don't think of. Although, I think someone may have mentioned it in this post. I would suggest your daughter go to a CC in the fall and try to knock out some of the nursing pre-req classes that can be transferred. Excuse my rudeness for posting the following in all caps, but it is very important. BEFORE TAKING ANY PRE-REQS, MAKE SURE THESE ARE CLASSES THAT CAN BE TRANSFERRED INTO A NURSING PROGRAM. A lot of science classes are not accepted as transfer credit in nursing programs. I saw a lot of my friends get screwed over by this. But, if she can knock out some of the Gen-Ed classes, do some volunteer or real work in the hospital to put on her resume, and do really well, she should be able to transfer into a nursing program for Fall 2014. Another option would be to do an ADN program (associated degree in nursing) and then do an accelerated RN to BSN program. Hope some of that information may be helpful to you!

OP again. Thanks for all the feedback.

Got the financial aid notification from UNC-Charlotte. They're only offering $5500 and that's in student loans! So, we're looking at a $20k/year bill. A bit shocked as our HHI is only $110k.

re: nursing program. Have since learned that PA programs would prefer non-nursing folks and that any major is acceptable to apply because they're after high GPAs. To make DD a more attractive candidate, we're now exploring unique degrees that will tie into healthcare without her having to go the typical Biology major route.

So, now we wait for UMD's decision which should be in by the end of the week. Not holding out much hope there though.

For DD's college career, we're willing to spend up to $10k/year. So....if worse comes to worse, we'll pay for her to attend UNC and she'll have to qualify for scholarships to stay there or transfer to UMBC/Towson/UMD her sophomore year.
