Anonymous wrote:OP, you've obviously managed to attract some of the biggest Rhee and/or Henderson haters to respond here (maybe some who've been let go and now have a little too much time on their hands to troll around here and spew fire). If this is what you wanted to hear, then by all means (though why ask?). If you want an honest opinion from those actually in the system, you should go ask them. I know a great many great teachers in DCPS who enjoy their work. There are many schools who have a turnover of virtually zero. I'm sure their days aren't all rosy but no less than their often less well paid peers in charters or privates. And it's also clear that some DCPS are rockier terrain than others, comes with the territory.[/quot
PP here, no one- I think is 'hating' on DCPS. Posters are responding to a question that was asked. Specifically, if the new chancellor changed the system. Then the OP sited evidence of what she thought made the system better: a bonus structure and the gala at the Kennedy center. As a current DCPS teacher, who was rated highly effective but refused to take the money- because I value my pension and job stability more than quick cash, I can answer honestly that no- things are not better. That does not mean that I do love my job- but its no better than before. In order to be a great teacher in DCPS you have to love the kids. The low SES FARMS kids. The chancellor said as much at her kick off this fall. As a current DC teacher I am very worried by anyone who wants to jump into my school/district for money.
So no- things are not better. Its the same problems as before. Join us if you want to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty- but please don't be another person chasing a bonus. Its not good for kids.
