Where do you buy the best delicious bread for when company comes over?

There's also a Spring Mill on Capitol Hill (Barracks Row).

I like Le Pain Quotidien for reliably good bread. Many locations too.
Lyon bakery makes good bread and they sell in many places these days - at Union Market, outside Union Station, Smucker farms, etc.

Panera Bread.

Trader Joe's. Buy their par baked ficelle in the bread section. Finish baking in oven right before company arrives. Seriously the best, freshest tasting bread. Shatteringly crisp on the outisde, soft and fluffy on the inside.

I live in s. Arlington and we like Best Buns in Shirlington. Also some of the breads available at Harris Teeter.

I like Best Buns a lot, also Heidelberg. In DC, Le Caprice in Columbia Heights has great baguettes.

To the La Brea fan, it's really good, but do they ship it in from LA? That's a non-starter for me.

oh, interesting no one has menioned St. Michel's Bakery in Rockville. The French owner is obsessed with the quality of his bread. The most amazing croissants ever and plenty of choices for dinner. Baguette? the closest if not the real thing to French baguettes.

+1! Husband prefers it to all others. Wegman's has some good options too.

If you're looking in DC, I agree with the PP who said Paul. I work near the Penn Quarter location.

Does anyone make their own bread, maybe using a bread machine? Recipes to share?

La Brea fan here. They ship it frozen and it is baked at the destination.
Have you tried their Toasted Honey Sunflower Seed? Their Cranberry Walnut? Rosmary Olive Round?
I could go on and on about this bakery.

Yes- I make it frequently, but not in a bread machine (stupid paddle kept popping off in the dough so I got rid of it). I use my stand mixer with the hook attachment or knead it myself- depending on how pissy my day has been (kneading is a fabulous stressbuster). Three of my favorites are below, and the no-kneads are wonderful.
