Also, I don't think this is a mystery. ADHD kids (my example bc that's what I know) work hard to control impulsiveness, etc., even if it doesn't always seem that way. When their defenses are low and they are tired/sick, it's harder to control.
I agree with 12:45. Also, my ASD kid does best between May and September, but it's clearly because he is happiest, calmest, and best-regulated when he gets a lot of outdoor time. Jan and Feb are hard months, although indoor activity (gymnastics, swimming) helps some.
Not to hijack thread but I wonder if there is something to this "pandas" illness. My son..nt in everyway..def was exhibiting strange behavoir recently and then a few days later was full blown sick. When he was put on an antiobiotic..weird behavoir completely stopped. This wasn't a situation where he was always quirky..he wasn't and when this happened out of the blue I was questioning whether you could suddenly have autism when you are just under five. Then as soon as it came on..went right away. THen I thought further back and I remember a time last year..exactly the same thing happened and he got sick and had an antibiotic and it all stopped. I just wonder if there is more of a link with kids with strep than people realize.
PP, did your son have a positive strep test? Both times?
Same here. We start a slow downward spiral (but still manageable) in November. Usually have a rebound of good behavior in early January and then late Jan-Feb are rough. |
this is 2215--both times they didn't check for strep until after he was on an antibiotic..This time I went back and asked for the strep test when I was trying to put it together and they said..too late since he is already being treated. I am going to go back now that he is off meds to do more testing. I am told there is a test that can say if you had strep recently. I will resport back in case anyone else is interested in hearing about this dynmamic. The thing I want to caution though..don't to give out false hope is my son had no quirks before being sick and then all the sudden --he was a completely different kid. He would do this thing with his fingers, he was wandering around..it was really strange and I did wonder if there was such a thing as sudden autism. No gonna lie..I was freaking out. Then after the antibiotic..literally he was fine. Last year when he had this episode..it wasn't as pronounced as this year so I wasn't as freaked out. It this makes sense.
