Funny enough, my DC came home last night and told me about how his friend is doing a special project this week so he can go to AAP and it's due Friday. Do people actually make their kids create special projects just to turn in with their AAP materials? I guess I shouldn't put anything past people when it comes to getting in.



Sounds like at least the parents are not doing it for the kid LOL.

Even with great test scores, a low GBRS can really hurt your child. Not that the parent portion would really help, but I know a few parents who felt that their child was definitely in the program just based on 99% test scores on both tests, but were shocked when they did not get in.

I think if the test prep. makes the high scores, the teachers may have different opinions(GBRS). But if high scores without any prep., the GBRS should be consistant with the scores.

Not test prep kids, just kids who are very intelligent, but don't always show it in the school setting. Many GT kids can fall into this category. Sometimes it is hard for a teacher that has 25 kids to see it if the child is introverted. Not saying that this is the case for OP, just personal experience with other kids.

Holy cow, if kids with 99% test scores aren't getting in, WTH? Are these kids with classroom issues? Now I am worried about DC with 98% on both tests!

Not a legend...it does happen. Probably not too often, but if you have an introverted child, a teacher may miss the signs and their GBRS may be lower than you expect. If kids got in to the program just on test scores alone, then there would be no "pool" of applicants and no GBRS. Just trying to point out that high test scores alone are not the only consideration. I have a child who got into the program with scores in the 97%-98% range a few years ago. He also had a high GBRS. But I know another child with 99% scores and a low GBRS who did not get in the same year.

Often teachers/AARTs/principals give shitty GBRS for smart kids.
If that happens, just WISC it. If the kid is samart, will do good on it.
Good WISC score will crush the GBRS. That's it.

In the end, the GBRS really depends on who the AART is. Our AART is tough and has a definite attitude issue per other family's reports. Makes me wonder about the AART at Haycock or one of these other schools that send so many kids and what scores they give.

Yup, it varies very much from teacher to teacher, AART to AART, and principal to principal.
Very subjective and inconsistent.

One DC - had amazing scores - 99% everything, knew would get great GBRS. Did nothing. Nada. Ziltch. Easily in.

Other DC - verbal scores were not as good, but NNAT and nonverbal were over 95% - is very young for grade. WISC ended up over 140. Will submit letters and a couple of work samples.

AART at base school suggested maybe I hold the WISC for appeal, but I think I will submit it to offset the lower FAT verbal. (WISC verbal was in the 130's)

Thoughts?

With a NNAT of 126 and CogAT VQN of 97, what GBRS score would DD need to get in?

True, our school has a low great schools rating, high FARMS and ESOL. My impression is that the school wants to keep the smart kids and put them in the level 3 program, which is really nothing.

I don't understand the point/advantage of holding a strong WISC for appeal. I'd load up the parent portion as best as possible in the first instance. Who wants to drag it out and win/lose on appeal (then everyone knows yours is an appeal kid, right)?
