Before you purchased, how many....

In 1999 (first house), I looked at several houses on my own, then at 7 houses in one day with an agent and bought one of those houses. (townhouse near vienna metro.) In retrospect, I probably should have looked longer, but I was anxious to stop renting and liked the house. (Sold for a lot more.)

In 2011, I looked at a total of 63 houses, mostly in arlington, over the course of a couple of months. Won one house, but used the inspection contingency to get out of it - huge red flags. Found another house, made an offer the same day, purchased it. had only seen a couple of houses i liked better and they were in south arlington and i wanted north.

2003: Looked at maybe 40 houses, bid on five. Got the fifth (obviously). One agent.

2012: Watched the market casually for a year, went to maybe five open houses. Kept my eye on an house we liked, which was initially overpriced. Got an agent and put a bid on the house within a month.

Bought in 2011. Looked at hundreds online (couldn't decide on a specific area in NoVA--we were looking in Falls Church and W. Springfield) but only about 15-20 in person over 6 week period. 1 agent. Ended up with W. Springfield 1st contract fell through on inspection and we ended up putting a contract on another house a week later.

Looked at two then bought the third. All in about one week. Spent a few months looking on line at red fin etc. Did not have a buyers agent. But did not really use this to our financial advantage either, should have used the share the buyers agent commission thing with red fin I think, but did not know about it, better than the sellers agent getting both ends of the commission.
