| Peeling does help. As does a wash in diluted white vinegar. |
From the EWG (source of the previous lists): Will Washing and Peeling Help? Nearly all of the data used to create these lists already considers how people typically wash and prepare produce (for example, apples are washed before testing, bananas are peeled). While washing and rinsing fresh produce may reduce levels of some pesticides, it does not eliminate them. Peeling also reduces exposures, but valuable nutrients often go down the drain with the peel. The best option is to eat a varied diet, wash all produce, and choose organic when possible to reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. http://www.foodnews.org/walletguide.php |
Thanks for the answer. Good to know! |
No, I can't find ANY real research studies that show that organic foods increase lifespan at all. I can find some evidence of the harmful effects of pesticides, but only for farm workers, who are exposed to tons of the stuff. Now someone may some day prove some small benefit for organic foods, but right now I believe that it is mostly avoiding the unknown. However, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity are great big known problems. So my advice for a person who cannot afford organic foods is to focus on a healthy diet, because that can dramatically increase lifespan. Again in case I get flamed for the above, I do buy some organic foods based on my wife's preferences. She mostly cares about dairy, eggs, and chicken. I do not worry about produce because to me the biggest risk to my family is not pesticides but bacterial contamination, which can happen for conventional and organic products. However, to each their own. |

Open up for the onions and asparagus plane! Yum yum! No? How about some eggplant? Cabbage? Doctor, my baby won't eat anything!
(Trying to be funny, not mean or sarcastic. That list just sort of cracked me up, given the hard time I have getting even nice sweet peas into the hangar.) |
