OPK's -- useless?

Anonymous
I got my basal thermometer on amazon. Easy to chart using the fertility friend app (there are others out there, too). Fascinating the way my body temp changes and its clear I ovulate on day 10,now, not day 14 like I mistakenly assumed for a few months. Wasted opportunities but now I know my body better. Can't believe I didn't temp and chart when we started ttc.

I do feel like OPKs were a waste of my time and money. Thermometer helps, certainly, but the only way I truly knew when I was fertile was by closely watching my cervical mucus. Worked like a charm.

When you say early, how early? Day 10 or before? I've typically started with the OPK's at day 10 and haven't seen anything yet. Then again I haven't been testing multiple times a day, which I will start doing today.

I ovulate on day 10, so I start my OPK's on day 7 or 8 to make sure I don't miss it. I also test twice a day.

i found OPKs to be priceless. I have a 6 week cycle and found out I was ovulating on day 28 or something like that. Got pregnant the second cycle I used them. Here's what I did:

combination of cheapie (wondfo) and digital (CBE) OPKs

early in cycle -- 1 cheapie in the morning (just to be safe)
mid-cycle -- cheapie and digital in morning, another cheapie after work

the digitals say to use first morning urine and i found that was the only time they worked for me -- see below.

the cycle i got pregnant, i got a smiley face on the digital sunday morning and a dark but not quite positive line on the cheapie. later that day, no smiley face and cheapie still not quite positive. monday morning, another smiley AND positive on the cheapie (unmistakable DARK line).

we had sex saturday, sunday, monday. bam. now i have a 6 month old.

Yay! You are giving me hope - this is our fifth cycle trying. I had not been using first morning urine for OPK b/c a friend told me it wasn't the best way and I had read that elsewhere. But I did this morning and BAM! A big unmistakable positive. I've been charting temp too and it spiked 7/10 of a degree this morning. Had sex last night, will do it again tonight and tomorrow night. I have a good feeling. . .fingers crossed!

Thanks. I'm the PP above and started doing just that - testing twice a day, first thing in the morning and when I get home from work and got the big positive today (day 13). I think I've been using the stupid things the wrong way this whole time and though we got close on a couple of previous cycles I think we just missed it. Praying we got it right this time!

PP here.

Good luck! I think people just need to know that the OPKs seem to work differently for different people and you need to experiment. For me, it had to be first morning urine. for other people, that apparently doesn't work. just buy a huge pack of the cheap OPKs and go to town.
