what do you do if your child doesn't get into any private schools and you live in the city?

This is a very astute observation. Especially in the current economy, I cannot believe that your child cannot get accepted to a private school somewhere in DC. Some of them are sure to come begging. (Whether, in the current economy, you find it is one that justifies a $25 - 30K per annum price tag is a decision only you can make.)

Try a parochial school - you don't have to be Catholic. Many Catholic school kids move to other schools at the middle school entry years (Mater Holy Child, Heights, Mater Dei . . .) so they don't have to do the high school switch. So space can open up in those schools - cheaper than private too.

You will be forced to select from a good public or charter school and face the realization that your child will be fine and you will save a ton of money.

Move out of city. There are a lot of excellent public school in this area.

May be easier said than done in this market. We have friends who had this happen (applied to only 2 or 3 schools with moving as a back up plan). They couldn't sell their house and couldn't buy something new without selling first.

If you really don't want to go public either move now or make sure you are applying to enough schools (5 or 6 is probably reasonably safe).
