How much taxes would we save if we moved from MoCo to Fairfax County?

Personally I'd pony up for each of the state versions of turbo tax and run them both to see how much difference there would be.

Great Idea! OP, this is probably your best tool with which to make your comparisons.

Except turbotax only does income tax, not real estate tax, or car tax or the other things that balance the income tax out (and you might need to have an exact address to know what your taxes are).

Yeah, but that's probably not hard to ballpark w/ a little research. It's probably good enough for a decent estimate.

Also the assessments for houses are different , no matter what the same size house and price will have much lower taxes in virginia. If you are liberal please don't move here we have enough of those messing up va and eventually you will need to move more south for lower taxes.

OP, think hard before you move -- this thinking is typical of VA, especially outside of the NoVa area!

I feel like there's a report on this that hits the paper every once in a while that generally finds the magnitude of the difference isn't that big.

I guess I can see moving for other regulatory reasons more than taxes (if I were gay and wanted to be able to marry, if I wanted it to be easier or harder to own a gun, if I wanted in state tuition in a particular university system). Otherwise, metro area commutes are so awful that I can't envision picking a jurisdiction to live in based on a marginal tax difference versus minimizing commuting pain.
