OP, you have a point, and I have thought the same, especially in the ES years. My child is in a private school where I see more bullying than at any public school. High SES parents also tend to be more permissive in the early years, and seem to think that everyone else holds their child in high esteem. They might not get that another person could see their DC as obnoxious.
THAT SAID, most of the cases of sexual assault in public schools (at the higher grades) comes from lower SES clusters. NOT SAYING that it does not happen at Whitman. |
| My child is a FARM kid, and I don't think there's more bullying among them, just that it's a different type of bullying. Rich white people bully with words, with actively leaving people out, and poor people bully by just punching you in the face. It's just two different ways of the same problem. |
We were at a ritzy rich-kids' private school. Bullying and misconduct was rampant and completely unchecked. Top donors' kids were immune from the rules (few as they were), and knew it. We're at public now. The student behavior is 100% better. Everyone knows that serious misconduct will have serious consequences. No one is immune from the rules, and everyone knows it. |
| I don't know. But FARMs schools are more likely to have uniforms, and I believe that's been proven to eliminate some types of ridicule and tone down competition, which could equate to a more peaceful environment. |
No uniforms in MCPS schools |
No uniforms in FCPS schools, either |
The more physical kids at my schools were usually low-income black and white kids from single-family homes. Only difference was that some black girls were also be physically aggressive. I had a locker in the hall with the vocational education classes where the black kids usually hung out, and black girls would punch white kids and take stuff from their lockers. The rich white kids just put others down verbally. The Asian and Hispanic kids kept to themselves. I think you just hear more about the incidents involving high SES schools because that where most DCUMers send their kids. |
Someone has a chip on her shoulder. Tsk, tsk. |
^This. It's not like some Hispanic mom working two jobs is going to complain on DCUM. A middle-class white woman who wants to feel better about sending her kids to school in Silver Spring rather than Bethesda is another story. |
