Overnight school trip - would you send your 7 year-old?

Lots of kids elsewhere aren't quite so feaking coddled as american kids. Teach your child a bit of functional independence and let him go. He can't and shouldn't be a baby forever---this is first/second grade? He can manage an overnight.

Is it the annual Sheridan trip? Mothers HATE that, but they must attend so I guess it is not that trip. Lice in the old mattresses, BTW, get one of those sheets constructed like a sleeping bag from BB&B. It's in the "Beyond" section. Sorry, just had to throw that FAmily Guy joke in there.

Is it Calleva? My kids hate those trips. Buggy. TIcks (think Lyme disease). Somehow the Calleva trips are supposed to be "spirit and community building". Hardly.

I gather you are talking about the trip taking place now - is the place adequately heated?

In retrospect, 7 is too young for this IMHO unless there is a teacher you really know (and remember the recent arrest of the Potomac/WES man - these terrible incidents do happen and an away trip is where it would happen).

And by all means, if you do send DC, please send them with a cell phone so they can call you and tell you if there was/is a problem. Fortunately, my daughter had one on a [insert well-known name of fumbling private school here] overnight trip. I found out that she was unsupervised (teacher later fired), one disturbed kids was acting out, lots of mean girl stuff going on . I drove up in Maryland and found her unsupervised and crying in a cold cabin. Next year they didn't allow cell phones. THink about it.

I would ask if they have the rule of no one on one contact. I am a leader in American Heritage Girls and attended the safety training run by the Boy Scouts. As everyone knows, the BSA had some bad things happen in their past, so they are experienced and know how to make sure those things don't happen again. They stress the importance of two deep leadership and no one on one contact. I would find out if they follow that rule. If two adults are present at all times, that should really help.

I'd let my child go as long as I was comfortable with the ratios -- no higher than 1:5.

No parents? Kids are 7? No, I wouldn't send my kid.

Nope, at 7 my kids had never spent the night away from home, so there's no way I'd have let them go on such a trip.

No I wouldn't send my son off to be with a bunch of potential pervs...other kids included. I don't know who is raising them. And I don't care if everyone else is going. Sorry but too bad. What is this private company and what do they do in private?

But I am not really into peer pressure or group think so that is just me. You can save those troll comments and proceed with your life.

I would say no unless DH or I could go as well. 7 is too young for what's described IMHO. We started this sort of trip at 6th grade.

7 yo would be hard for me, but 6th grade seems way late. I went to overnight camp for a month beginning after 4th grade.

Latin Americans rear children much differently than Americans. I've been to many Latin American weddings with children passed out next to the dance floor while their parents continue to party (!?!).

Anyway, yes, I would send my 7 yr old with a cell phone and specific instructions to call for anything and I will be there as soon as possible.
