As a previous poster mentioned, the real issue on timing is insurance. Some insurance will not cover any infertility treatment until you have been trying for 1 year and will not cover IVF until you have been trying 2 years, regardless of circumstances. Possibly the RE just doesn't want patients to come in thinking their insurance will cover when it will not (still not a reason for rudeness).
A good RE will talk to you, get an understaning of your situation, and creat a plan. If they think you have not been trying long enough, they should tell you. But, I would not guess they would turn anyone away based on number of cycles, particularly if you have an identifiable concern already.
