Recommend your oven-safe skillet

This is the issue. The All Clad is a much fancier gift. And absolutely nothing wrong with it--it's a really nice pan.
But for a "workhorse," for a cook, the cast iron is going to be much more useful. Even if it is also much more affordable.

Of course, you'd need a dual-axle pickup to haul it all home, and you'd have to reinforce the floor under the Christmas tree (and the pots and pans cabinet) to keep it from falling into the basement.
