This happened to my husband too, cracked it a couple days after buying and the person just fixed it fir free. Apparently it can be really random and depends on the person, some will charge some will just replace it fir you.

OP here with an update. First tried the two kiosks in Montg. Mall that fix iphones, but neither of them fix the 5 yet. Then I made an appt with apple. Went in and was offered $229 plus 99 for applecare. after 1 hour of talking to person, manager, etc, (with other customers chiming in), got the cost down to $49 for a care visit.

Interesting introduction to the iPhone and Apple world for me.
