Cheapest way to update kitchen cabinets?

I had that problem with my bathroom vanities. The first one I thought I could lightly sand and stain until I got to the faux wood box and it was a disaster. The second one I used the rustoleum transformation kit and it worked like a dream. I'm considering now doing it to our kitchen. We'd had it refaced but the laminate veneer looks like crap after 7 years.
