The Summer Camp (Sleep-Away) Battles Begins...

I think you need to tell her that lazing around isn't an option, but that you will work with her to find other alternatives for the two weeks. You can suggest summer school - if she'd rather take algebra than go to camp, you should let her.

Seriously, tell her Algebra or camp? That is awful and a recipe for having your daughter hate you!

You get what you pay for, I would not force my child to go to 2 weeks of girl scout camp just because it is cheap. Why not let her do a day camp. I also think this age can be tough for camp. If she doesn't click with a group, it could be torture at 13. Lots of kids quit going to camp around this age. My daughter goes to a private sleepaway camp and the prime ages are 9 - 12.

Would love to know of other options in the $400-500 range for a 2 week camp.

I will also look into volunteer work. Thanks, 16:40.

They don't exist. We pay $800/week for sleepaway camp.

I would look into local day camps as well as volunteer opportunities. MoCo libraries take teen volunteers.

I agree, except that my sons ages 12 and 15 have gone to a private sleepaway camp for years. The 15yo will go this summer.

You do get what you pay for.

PP here: Also found out that the other girls at GS camp were pretty rough. That is why we went with Day Camp. Still expensive, but keeps DD very busy and happy in the summer. 1 week private overnight = 2 weeks day. Still there is nothing as cheap as GS camp.
