When did the authority of the Pastor (the church's teacher at the local level) to "morally guide" us end? According to you it was valid until the middle ages. What occurred since then that fundamentally changed the role of the church as our moral guide? I'm genuinely interested in your answer, its not a rhetorical question.

It's totally inappropriate. My mother has been trying to get me to go to her church and when she told me that the priest endorsed Romney (but couched it in some directive from a pastoral letter from the bishop and abortion blah blah blah) I told her thanks for giving me another reason not to go.
