I think it will depend on how you put your older baby to sleep. When they are really young, it doesn't matter because the mattress is at the highest level. We have a fixed rail, convertible style crib and it has been fine. BUT, we put our baby to bed awake, not asleep, so waking her when we lay her down is not a concern. When its time to get her out, she sits up and reaches for us, so its no problem.

I always use the drop side. I'm 5'2 and 7 1/2 months pregnant with a toddler at home--drop side is essential for me. But I always preferred it before I was pregnant--it's just convenient. |
I'm the 5'3" poster from earlier, and I forgot to mention that I'm 30 weeks pregnant -- again, not having a drop side hasn't been an issue. So clearly it's a matter of preference and, likely, what you have and know. Pick out a crib you like, and you'll likely be fine either way! |
I have one with a drop side and I'm 5'4''. I hated it. It was so loud with its clicking, that it would wake my son up.
I just got a stepstool and used that to put my son in the crib. |
