Thoughts on Madeira?

So, 19:40, you hate the school because you met one "dull" girl and because you have issues with the responsible availability of birth control.

These are pretty stupid reasons to hate a school you clearly know nothing about.

I suspect 19:40 is a Prep boy turned down for a date by a Madeira girl. And I really don't think the birth control stuff is true, or at least it wasn't when my DD was there a couple of years ago.

19:07 13% of class being international isn't enuf? "

The average class size is approximately 12 students. 54% of the students board on campus. International students are also represented on campus and make up 13% of the campus population.

Name one SERIOUS long term community outreach program Madeira has done for the McLean Community? Were they in the parade last week? no. Did they work on the campaigns. No. Did they do any local work on the campaigns. No. Did they help out in Sandy. No. Did they offer up facilities for Sandy or Katrina? No.

Yes, those poor, under served and suffering people in McLean. Such a needy community and marching in a parade would solve their problems.

Anyone looking for information on Madeira should ignore the strange, bile-filled postings of the McLean poster who has purportedly met one Madeira school ever -- her post says much more about herself than Madeira (assuming it is not just a silly attempt to stir up controversy).

Those in the independent school scene in DC have a great deal of respect for Madeira. They were way out in front on their co-curriculum program (prior posters have described it) and have resisted the pressure from sports-loving society to scrap the program (which precludes sports practices on one weekday). A friend who taught there for many years spoke emphatically of the very supportive school culture for the girls, which can actually be a hard thing to foster in an all-girls environment with high achieving kids.

Lots of good things to say about Madeira, in brief. It is well worth you checking it out as an option.

Sorry, prior post edited to fix a typo:

The school was closed after Sandy due to power outages. No facilities to offer up. Did Langley HS house Katrina refugees, did any local schools house refugees?

Not sure what community outreach is required in McLean. The girls, through co curriculum, work at River Bend Park, Special Olympics, schools (usually not in McLean since the needs are far greater elsewhere), Capitol Hill, yes on campaigns, and many other places in the community. The school hosts multiple summer camps in the summer and shares the pool and fields with local McLean lacrosse, volleyball and swim clubs. The outer quest facility is used by various local schools.

Still waiting for a single example of serious local community service or give-back. I've lived here for 30 years and have never seen Madeira take a lead in anything, locally, ever.

Even 21:31 who has DD at the school said that the opportunities for private service are nonexistent.

The internships on the Hill are arranged in advance to pad the girls' resumes. Everyone knows that.

The "multiple" summer camps that Maderia "hosts" are exorbitantly expensive, and you must sit at your computer Dec. 31 at midnight to try and get in the "first come, first serve" slots for them. $480 a week for a very young child is just outrageous. http://www.madeira.org/summer-programs/summer-community-programs/campgreenway/

When I went there there was a campus adult who took multiple girls to get the morning after pill. But let me be real clear: I think that's a good thing. To each her own.

Re: service - yes. It's weak. It's comfortable "service" often in places with little need for it. But I have a feeling Rhys by design. Can you imagine Muffy Livingston signing off on her little Ella going into a soup kitchen in southeast? ...

Even if this is true, it's so inappropriate to mention.

We get it, McLean Mom -- you don't like Madeira.

To respond to a few of your issues:

1. I actually have worked with some of their kids, at the Special Olympics, and they were terrific.

2. The Capitol Hill internships also sound great to give kids an introduction to how things work on the Hill -- nobody thinks ANY Hill interns are drafting legislation or doing anything much more than stuffing envelopes, but with eyes open to learn it can be great. Madeira has taken the lead in using D.C.'s resources (something other independent schools are doing more), and they have the respect of the local independent school community.

3. I don't know anything about the camps, but if you have to sit at the computer to get a slot it sounds like they must be good. Thinking about how much day care costs, a really good camp for $480 week wouldn't bother me -- and clearly it doesn't bother the market if they are sold out.

We get that you don't think highly of the school, but you seem oddly invested in the issue for someone who is not a parent, or grad, or former teacher. Your thoughts as a neighbor just aren't very convincing to me.

well, 16:14 and 17:19 who attended there get it.

My dd went to the camp when she was younger and loved it! It is a great camp with a variety of activities, and I did not wait by the computer to sign her up. Actually, return parents get first priority.
