Tankless Water Heater

I love mine, other than the fact that the one time it had an issue, we had an impossible time finding a plumber in town that knew how to fix it. It took four companies.

It *really* depends on the model and installation. We had a BOSCH that tripped a sensor and shut off when the incoming water was too cold and demand high. Worked beautifully except in the coldest part of winter (in a colder zone), so you can imagine how much fun that wasn't. We rented out that house to a couple who couldn't work with it, and that was a nightmare.

We now understand the systems much better and, if our current house didn't have a brand new, fairly efficient tank heater, would replace it.

There are models that are combined. They have a small, well-insulated tank with a massive heating element. You get the hot water from the tank right away, and the water coming in is slightly pre-heated by the tank before it goes through the element. We're excited about these. We also know people who use these with a solar thermal preheater to heat the whole house in addition to hot water. The combined boiler/tankless systems are fine, too. They're not inefficient because the exchange is good and they're only on for a few minutes. You also save a lot by not having two separate systems.

The systems can work, and if you are a geek who enjoys

I talked to multiple plumbers about installing a tankless yet because I am trying to make my house super eco. They all recommended going a conventional tank unit and then going with a high-efficiency tank heater (like this an AE Smith Vortex), if you want to spend money for efficiency and unlimited hot water.

AE Smith has some neat stuff. I wish we were doing that kind of HVAC right now.

"Our plumber recommended:

Makes 155 gallons per hour burning 75,000 BTU, compared to a typical 35,000 BTU 50 gallon HWH, making 40 gallons per hour.

No problems, are so glad we got this over the tankless, which was twice the cost when installation was included."

How much did you pay to get this installed?
