do veterinarians universally over-charge?

Went to three diff vets in the area... totally felt like I was getting hosed. I finally discovered the optimum wellness plans at petsmart - it's basically about $300 / year and includes all their well visits + basic shots and free exams for pesky things like injuries, etc.

I wouldn't do this for a cat, but it made sense for us to do this for our dog. Especially when he was a puppy, the shots and visits alone would've cost us thousands, not to mention spay/neuter. The vets are all fine, short waits, clean facility, etc. NOT pushing crazy treatments on me. And, best thing is I can call the vet when I have a question or need to get his toe looked at without feeling like I am going to be $300 poorer for it.

glad to know i am not the only one who doesnt take my dog to the vet unless really needed. I do the vaccines, mostly rabies, she hardly ever goes outside to stay (she has always been an indoor dog, doesnt like staying out long). Have used the banfield vets in the past but looking for a vet to take her in and have her checked for some old age issues she is exhibiting. Used to go to a vet that charged outrageous prices. One night we needed a cat euthanized and were told they would do an exam first to determine the cat indeed needed to be euthanized, and although I told her we didnt want the exam (the cat was literally dying in my husbands arms as I spoke to them on the phone), they insisted it was at the drs discretion. They also wouldnt accept a post dated check when I told them I wouldnt get paid and the money in my account until 2 days later. Fucking ripoffs is what they are. All about money. After that call, they lost my business forever

Here, yes. I have spent more on my dog since I moved here a year ago than I have spent the other 5 years of owning him! You have to stick up for yourself and just say no to some shots and unnecessary blood work!

Even if I just want to pick up heartworm or flea and tick, they pull his chart just to see when he was in last!

Um, yeah. I wouldn't be coming in for heartworm and flea and tick if I didn't take care of my dog!
