| Another NP here. The previous posters don't take into consideration enough that $500 is a really huge amount of money for a large percentage of families in FCPS. I doubt you can get a true understanding of the % of HG kids in FCPS. |
| IMHO if your child qualifies for MENSA they belong in AAP. Check out the mensa website for breakdown of tests and scores necessary for membership. Additionally, if your child is in the 99% composite for CogAT or the NNAT, they really are GT. |

First of all to be clear 145 the test score is WISC score not NNAT/CogAt.
Majority of kids in AAP don't take WISC, so don't know their WISC score. Normally kids appealing take WISC. Yes WISC 145+ is not common. So... Few take it + not common. |
| DC has a WISC over 145 and I was told that it was extremely rare. But like you when i read these posts it sounds like every kid has this. But I guess they don't. And I think you are right that people confuse getting a high nnat or cogat score as an iQ score - which it is not. The WISC was expensive but a necessity for us so we did it, that's why we have the score. DC is in AAP and still doesn't move fast enough, but it is certainly better than what was happening before AAP. |
| Didn't take the WISC.aced the NNAT and CogAT. smart kid. I have 3, but this one is exceptionally bright. Thinks outside the box.other 2 are bright, but not exceptional. AAP is good, as able to be more creative and in control of the day, not too regimented. |

By the way WISC or FSIQ over 145 is kind of benchmark score for identifying profoundly gifted kids by many programs
such as http://www.davidsongifted.org/youngscholars/Article/Davidson_Young_Scholars___Qualification_Criteria_384.aspx So again don't confuse it with NNAT/CogAt scores. My kid got 160 on NNAT. 145+ on NNAT/CogAt is not rare. 145+ on WISC/FSIQ is rare. |
| Agree with other poster, MENSA is a decent benchmark that is used everywhere. |
But 99% on CogAt or NNAT does not ensure AAP placement. |
| Really! Why would 99% not get you in AAP? Kids with a lower score could get in and do get in. |
CogAT is just part of the process. a 99% CogAT with no other indication of intelligence can be a flag for prepping for the test in an otherwise average student. |
| Interesting! Aside from GBRS, what are the other indicators? DRA, MRA I assume, but what else? |
| School work...report cards. But it seems to come down to to GBRS + Tests . If tests area really high and not supported by GBRS, they seem to suspect prepping. Or a nother way to put it is a low GBRS will not get in(I do not know what "average" GBRS is. A score of 115 and at 16 GBRS can get in to AAP. I have seen 145 CogATs not get in, then map to a 125 WISC, on the forum. That tells me the 145 was not indicative of the true ability: there is a big difference between 145 and 125. |
Does every kid get GBRS score? or just the ones in the pool? 115 doesn't even get you in the pool. Does parent referral makes teacher to do GBRS scoring on the kid? |
|
If scores are very good across the board - NNAT, CogAt verbal, CogAt quantitative, CogAt non-verbal, it can override mediocre GBRS.
|
|
PP: True. But Average NNAT, off the chart CogAT, and average GRBS can be an indication of prepping, or something else (i.e., gifted student who had a bad day during the nnat).
6:46: All kids in pool and parental referred get a GBRS. |
