OP here. I applied for this job July 31, interviews 8/23 and 9/6, marked "selected" 9/7, tentative offer 9/14. So about 7 weeks, which I think is unusually fast.

My guess is they are trying to complete the hire and have the person start if possible before the end of the fiscal year when federal agencies will be funded on a continuing resolution. Lets not even start down the path of sequestratation.

YOU GOT THE JOB. Sometimes the automated systems are faster than the time the HR SPEC can respond.
