Ceiling fan in a living room?

Both! We have a ceiling fan and 6 recessed lights in our family room (vaulted ceiling). The light on the actual ceiling fan is pretty worthless so the recessed lights are key.

We have a very good quality walnut wood fan in the living room, with a light fixture. It's noiseless and blends with the walnut tones of our furniture. Cost about $600.

We want something that moves air to eliminate temperature strata. It's on continually at the lowest speed, except when we cook something smelly or we're away. No breeze or sound, but when it's off you can feel the temp differences in the house.

We have both recessed lights (eight) and a fan without a light. The lights are on two different circuits, with two above the television I sir own circuit. This way, we turn those lights off when watching tv to reduce glare. Two circuits also gives you various options for lighting. Both circuits are also on dimmers.

Go for the fan--you will love it. There are lots of nice options available--it seems like the selection has improved in the past 5 years or so. Just look for one with a nice bright light.

Hi, do you mind explaining more about this? We have a separate living room and family room, and I want to understand what's inappropriate about it before we put another fan in the living room. Thanks.

+9 or whatever that a fan is great but it shouldn’t be the main (or even any) light. Recessed lights are fine if they’re on a dimmer but you also need more lamps.

We have a ceiling fan with a light in our living room (casual). It provides plenty of light. I would find having turn on 3 lamps annoying.

This isn't a real rule, it totally depends on the house and the decor in your "living room." Sure, a ceiling fan might look out of place in the formal drawing room of a big Georgian house, but in your standard DC colonial it would be just fine.

I think you should go with a chandelier or a ceiling light fixture. I don't like fans though. My AC can function as a fan if we need air flow.

This.
Also agree that fan styles and options seem to have improved in the past few years.

There's absolutely nothing inappropriate about it. PP is probably someone who also sniffs at bookshelves or family photographs in public rooms of the house.
