Basement renter is a hoarder, what can I do?

Disclaimer: I am not a psych. Hoarding is a disease. My mom has it. It is a very sad disease that ruins lives and relationships. In our case (and many other cases), it seems to escalate, to build on itself. My mom goes thru semi purges (getting rid of some stuff) and then replaces all the stuff with new stuff. For the sake of your child (and you), I would not renew the lease, but I would give her plenty of warning -- your renter will need plenty of time to adjust to her new reality and it may take her longer to get her stuff out. Based on my limited experience, I would not expect her to "get better." I would tell her now, today, that you intend to keep the basement for your family (even though that may be a white lie). Also, take pictures of her area, the filth and document conversations/correspondence in case you have to force her out. You may have to "help" her move out.

Get her out. She is turning your house into a firetrap and you have a child.

can you post any pictures of the mess? Hoarding is not the same as messy vs dirty.

This. I would be as concerned (if not more) about the fire hazards of living above a hoarder as I would about the roaches and rodents.
