10:19 here: 7-8 PM.
Dress the kids in their travel clothes and leave no later than 4:30. Drive straight through and get a late breakfast when you get there. Stopping for lunch for an hour at noon in Williamsburg will add 4 hours to your trip (an hour for lunch, and hour before and and 2 hours after the stop). It is a VERY popular week to go down to the beach for one last hurrah before the school year.
Saturday is so busy because most house rentals are Saturday to Saturday. I drove down to nags head one summer on a Saturday and swore I would never do it again. That was before I had kids. I second staying overnight in Williamsburg with your friend if possible, maybe Friday?
Take 460 and stop at the Virginia Dinner in Wakefield.
We went to OBX on 8/4 - 8/11 and left at 5 am. We sat got to the OBX bridge right around 2 am and it took us 2.5 hours to go from there to Duck, which is pretty north. So, really, leave as early as you possibly can stand. Others in our group who were able to get to the bridge at 9 am had no problem. There is a definite window. Everyone must be leaving earlier and earlier because we arrived at the same time two years ago and sailed right through. Good luck!!
Uh. PP here. We GOT to the bridge at 10 am and sat for 2.5 hours. I'm an idiot today.
We are here now. We got down here early ( as we alway do) and had lunch while we waited for our rental. Traffic heading towards Duck was heavy and lasted until 7 pm, both Saturday and Sunday. If you are staying in Duck or Corolla be close to your rental by 9 or 10 am or you'll sit on the bridge and on Duck Rd
Is it that bad on Sunday too? We have Sunday to Sunday rental last week in August.
This week, yes Sunday was bad. We could see the traffic slowly making its way up to Duck/Corolla. Last week of August may not be too bad because so many schools are back in session and not as many people are on vacation.
First, thanks for clarifying. I kept thinking "5:00 am and it still took them 21 hours?" Also, no need to feel like you're an idiot. For my first week back from NC beaches, I was in "vacation hangover" mode the ENTIRE week. |
