Tell me about taxes in MD

Anonymous
for folks in the OP's income range, Virginia has much lower taxes UNLESS (and this is very important) you are the kind of family who buys nice new cars every 3 years (not sure how boats are taxed). We have a 2005 BMW and a 2005 Saab and our car taxes are very low.

you need to focus on state & local income taxes in MD vs state income taxes in VA (no local). compare sales taxes. compare stuff like car registrations, etc. and then look at property taxes for homes in your price point.

so assuming you have 4-5 year old cars or more, you would probably save thousands by living in VA.

But really, I live in VA even though I am from MD because of the public colleges. I like the UVA/W*M/VT options more than just UMCP.

*One big caveat. If you were to live further out than McLean, you may have to drive on the toll road and that can add up pretty quickly.

It looks from that analysis as though real estate taxes in VA are a little higher, but again not enough to make it a deciding factor
