Glenarden Woods Elementary

Did anyone else go to the orientation tonight? They were surprised by the number of parents in attendance but I think that will be the norm but the school just wasn't prepared. They didn't have enough packets printed out or enough chairs set up.

Yes that was concerning. I was a little annoyed because I paid for a babysitter and didn't hear anything new. Hoping that they will know more by this Thursday!

So since they are moving to an all TAG model this year, are they keeping their same teachers or have they brought in new, TAG trained teachers?

What is this Thursday?

I think they said the teachers would be in their classrooms and you can come by with your child. We haven't gotten a teacher assignment some guess we would just wander around.

The kids will be put into a homeroom in alphabetical groups for the first few days while they do testing to determine which homeroom will be their permanent one. All the kids will switch classes and have several teachers. I worry because DS has special needs and I have to make it clear to five teachers that he needs to be at the end of row. He can't sit between people. It's sensory overload for him.

Did you stay the entire time? We left after an hour and thirty minutes. It was hot, so there was a lot of BO, and the man in front of me must have had something against deodorant.
I didn't find a babysitter until the very last moment and it was just too late to pick him up, so we took the kids. DH wound up taking DS out in the hall with him because it was just too hot.

Ok thanks. What time did they say we could go? I assume during "school hours"?

Does any one know what time we can come by on Thursday with the children?

I called the school today to find out about Thursday and the person who answered the office phone said to call back tomorrow. I've emailed the principal and the person listed as the special education contact on the website and got zero response . I will try calling tomorrow morning.

I have to call tomorrow to set up an IEP meeting and I will try to remember to ask.

Well that sucks because I need to set up an IEP meeting or at least give them the recommendations made at the end of last year. I did speak to a teacher about it on Thursday but I want to go further with it.

I requested an IEP meeting prior to the start of the school year. I guess I should have done that in writing. A bit disappointing.

Ok, just called again about Thursday and the principal is not back from her meeting this morning so the person who answered the phone said to try back later. I did find out that the Special Education person for the school is Maria Parrotina but she didn't have any contact info for her on file. It is not the person they have listed on the school website.

I was able to get an email address by searching the employee directory on the county site. That seems to be the most accurate place to check. I don't know if this crazy link will come through but here is a list of all the staff at the school with contact info: I went to http://www1.pgcps.org/ then clicked on Employees and then "Employee Directory" to do the search.

Mrs. Marie Parrotina is the Special Education Chairperson at GWES and should be contacted regarding IEP concerns (301 925 1300). Mrs. Claire Carey is the staff counselor and should be contacted regarding 504's.
