McCain's VP choice. Thoughts?

she is governor of alaska. reforming a state with a relatively low population is not the same as doing it for a whole very diverse country. They might as well have asked my friend from Virginia, she is opinionated, young, has 3 kids and believes in change

Pres nominees tend to pick VP nominees who add different strengths to their ticket. Obama, who is trying to run as an outsider and is critiqued for his lack of experience picked Biden -- the ultimate insider who has spent years and years in Washington. McCain has picked someone younger and is female to try and sway those votes. I think it was pretty obvious that he was going to pick a woman as his running mate.

I really take offense at the last poster who is attacking Palin for chosing not to terminate her pregnancy because her child has Down Syndrome. That is stepping over the line from the right to chose to enforcing this ideal that we should only give birth to perfect children.

Would ANYONE vote for this woman if she were running for President? Honestly, now . . . .

And the point is that she IS running for president!

i just wish he would have chosen a different woman.

and I think it is wonderful that she chose to have her child. however, I am concerned that she will make her choice every woman's only choice.

and I think that a 4 month old baby with down syndrome needs his mother. I am not saying he needs a SAHM, but a mother that is around regularly. I know that that is against feminism but that's just how I feel.

Agree with PP's last para -- BUT, my biggest concern is how she will hold up and be perceived by other foreign leaders. We are in crisis, and our credibility is at stake. Bush has made us a laughing stock all over the world. We have some very very serious foreign policy issues facing us and she doesn't have the experience or, I am sorry to say, the presence to project the image we want, even as a VP, much less if something (god forbid) happens to McCain and she becomes the President.

While this choice will certainly generate a lot of interest and buzz, McCain just handed Obama the presidency.

Agree wholeheartedly with your second paragraph. PP who attacked Palin should be ashamed of her/himself. You are no better than the right-wing pro-lifers whom you attack.

To 13:10---while I agree with you that I don't think Palin should be criticized for her choices involving her Down's child, I am offended by her politics---which would force all other women to make the exact same choices she did. I think the fact that she was "willing to put her money where her mouth is" in terms of being anti-abortion should be enough to terrify pro-choice women from voting for a McCain/Palin ticket.

also to consider: if McCain dies of a heart attack (and we all know he is no spring chicken) she will be the president... again, zero experience with foreign politics.

Oh here we go-nice.

I like her and can relate to her, an inspiration for this working mom!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!! He picked an outsider and I was energized and greatly inspired by her speech.

I was on the fence, but now am fully on board and know my vote.

Oh the hypocrisy. Dems won't be able to argue themselves out of a paper bag on this one.

How do you know that Daddy isn't at home (her high school sweetheart too)?

Does this just fuel the WM v SAHM debate? We've all seen it here on DCUM about a million times.

False.

Here's a short article about how Obama and Biden got to know each other on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Just a small window into Obama's engagement with foreign policy issues: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/washingtondc/la-na-senate27-2008aug27,0,2958508.story

you didn't read my post carefully enough. I am perfectly fine with her choice to be a mom of a special needs child and to work. But I am also a believer that special needs children need special attention and benefit from parents who have a steady and predictable job. Do you have a special needs child? I do. And let me tell you, it is not easy to juggle my child's need and work.
