What do you take from this? 14-year old shoots intruder

The fact that the first thing this kid thought was to go shoot the intruder just shows how messed up the society is.

Also, why did a 14 Y.O have easy access to the gun in the first place? So much wrong in this story, but of course gun nuts will use it to justify not having to have guns locked up/properly secured.

Yeah, because the intruder breaking in and pointing a gun at kids was just minding his own business...

This is how I feel. I am definitely not a 'gun person' and don't have guns in the house, but kudos to this kid for his quick thinking and doing the right thing to save his siblings. Yes, he could have also called 911, but are you sure they would have gotten there in time? Sounds like the intruder is still alive, and I'd rather have one injured intruder than 4 dead kids.

+1, and I usually am completely anti-gun. But thank goodness the boy was able to act -- he saved himself and his siblings from being terrorized or worse. Who wants to think what those burglars would have done when they found the house not empty?

Messed up indeed. He was supposed to run upstairs with his siblings, hide inside the closet and call 911 from there.

Unless he lives in a farm afar away from everything.

This is so scary. No wonder the parents say they're traumatized and refuse to comment.

There are a lot of bad things that could have happened if the little ones got their hands on the gun; or if the intruder had felt threatened and managed to get a shot off before the kid did (an issue w/ guns: maybe an adult, seeing an unarmed kid, would turn around and flee-- certainly the charges for murder are much greater than those for home invasion); or if the kid hadn't injured the intruder bad enough so that he couldn't get a shot off. Just scary. The likelihood of having your home broken into by an armed robber just seems so low anyway, no wonder these parents are freaked out. And personally, I think it must have been crazy scary for the kids to have been in the house with a bleeding intruder on the floor. Wow. Just so sad for them. I'm glad they're all unharmed, but mentally-- eek, who would want their teenager to have to go through that?

2. The boy did not know how to use it.

We don't know that; he may well have been trained.

5. The boy did not know whom to call for help

How do you know he didn't know whom to call? He went with his first instinct.

6. People think this might be a heartwarming story

I don't think it's heart-warming, but I am very glad four innocent children were spared physical harm.

How long would it take the police to arrive? How long would it take the intruder to come upstairs and get into the closet? The police are unlikely to arrive first.

I don't think kids should have access to guns because the odds of this situation are much smaller than the odds of them hurting themselves or others, but given the situation he was in, this boy did exactly the right thing. Good for him.

A 6-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself in a quiet neighborhood of single-family homes in the Clinton area Monday afternoon, and Prince George’s County homicide detectives are considering filing charges against a 20-year-old who lived with the boy and apparently brought the gun to the house, authorities said.

What's your point PP? That ALL guns are bad? That this 14 year old teenager shouldn't have shot the intruder? Your posts are entirely different than the original story.

Herding 3 other little kids sounds like trying to herd kittens. Not sure there's time for that when someone's standing in your house with a gun.

Am I the first poster here, after all this time, to ask why the 14 YO sibling was watching after his siblings alone??? He did well and good, but isn't that still a little too young?

Oh hell. I lived on a farm. My 14 year old daughter carried a pistol openly whenever she was alone. I taught her to shoot and made sure she carried after the pervy neighbor came up behind her in the field and scared her.

After that, he was frightened of her. Also, she killed several feral dogs after our livestock. Quite competently.

There is nothing wrong with kids and guns provided they know what they are doing. Small children can learn early to leave the guns alone, just as we did when we were kids.

Given that, at 14, my daughter could milk a cow, break up a dogfight, shoot and kill a feral dog, pull fence, build a fire, and drive a tractor: no, 14 is NOT too young to watch siblings.

Honestly, y'all coddle your kids so badly it is a wonder they can wipe their own butt.

No 14 isn't too young to watch younger siblings. My 14 yr old nephew babysat my 4 yr old recently. He regularly watches his 5 year old brother.
