Scary thinking what would happen if there was a TSUNAMI.

PP-- we've been leaving to come home from OBX by 8am for almost 10 years and we haven't hit traffic.

We left at 7:45 a.m. on June 30 and it took us ten hours, including three and a half hours to go the last 23 miles from diggers dungeon (highly recommend!!) to pine island just north of duck. It was BRUTAL. Heed the advice to leave early.

2011 summer vacation - OBX in July. 98 degrees, 10 hour dc - OBX drive.
Never again....
2012 summer vacation - nantucket. 82 degrees (during last week's heat wave), 9 hour DC - Nantucket drive/ferry
Go north folks.
Added bonus is that the state of MA isn't governed by racist, homophobes like NC is. Your tourism tax dollars are supporting the crazy right wing state.

But the water is freezing up there and you have to deal with lots of Massholes.

We have a Sunday-Sunday rental in August. Any thoughts on Sunday traffic from DC?

leave early!!! last year we slacked off and left later in the morning and it was HELL! creeping. for hours...

on the way back we usually stick around, eat lunch and hang out 'till after 1ish and then take off. no traffic issues. no rush to get home.

Sunday is much better going there. Returning you hit the weekend travellers, esp from VA beach and on I 95.

The worst part of the traffic is in this area between here and the spilt off 95.

OP here; so we left last Saturday at 4:30 am. No traffic until we got over the bridge and onto that one lane road going through Duck. But it tool us over an hour to get into Corolla. Whole trip took 6 hours. Going home yesterday we didn't rush, got out if the house, had lunch, got on the road around 1:30-2. No traffic at all going out. The traffic coming in at 2 pm was brutal though, backed up fir mikes and miles before the bridge. I can easily see it taking 4+ hours just for the last few miles. Thanks for all the advice!

Thanks for the report! What time was the traffic jam on the road from the bridge to Corolla? We were thinking of getting across the bridge early but then going to the dunes (south of the bridge) until the house was ready...
