Hmm. Michelle Obama was born in Chicago to a city water plant employee a secretary at Spiegel's catalog store. Cindy McCain was born in Phoenix to the man who founded Hensley & Co., one of the largest beer distributers in the US. Michelle "babbled" about her American life because hers was representative of the true American Dream. Cindy McCain was born into and grew up in great affluence and never actually had to work a day in her life. Why is this so confusing? |

Michelle grew up in a blue color household. There is no denying that. Both Michelle and Barack grew up in families in which values such as hard work and educational achievement were imparted to them. Again, no denying that. Both turned down opportunities for greater financial gain in favor of jobs they deemed more beneficial to society. Once again, no denying it. As a result of Barack's appearance at the Democratic Convention in 2004 in which he achieved national exposure and his subsequent rise on the American political scene, he earned a considerable amount of money from book sales. Their wealth is a new development. Also, I am sure you wish you could "babble" half as good as Michelle. That was a great speech. The Obama family arguments must rival the Lincoln-Douglas debates in terms of oratory quality. |
GO DEMOCRATS!! Blue collar AND blue color! ![]() |
Great, and I was so proud of that post. ![]() ![]() |
I just couldn't help it - it tickled me. ![]() And you should still be proud. Most of the time when you post something I feel like writing in..."YEAH!!! WHAT HE SAID!!" |
You know, I really don't understand this obsession with a candidate's roots and requirement that they come from humble origins. Is this just for the Obamas? Because I never heard anyone talk about JFK's humble roots. Or Teddy Kennedy's for that matter. This is all just really silly; if you were never poor you can't care about poor people? People with money are inherently unworthy? This class warfare is ignoring very real issues that we should be discussing, not whether a candidate makes 6 figures or not. |
Thank you. |
I don't think anyone is saying that it is a requirement to come from humble origins to "care about poor people". However, I do think that a candidate with over $100 million to his name and so many houses that he can't remember how many he has may have trouble understanding in any real way what it is like to scrimp to pay bills every month. |
Surely you are aware that McCain has been running commercials suggesting that Obama is a celebrity who is unable to relate to "normal people"? What Michelle was conveying is the reality that both Obama's came from modest backgrounds -- quite middle class given that they made less that $5 million per year and could easily recall the number of houses they owned. Far from being unable to relate to the problems facing many Americans in these economically challenging times, the Obamas have themselves faced those issues. Its frequently a good strategy to counter your opponent's attacks -- especially if they are untrue. |
I understand why she was doing it, but I really feel that she shouldn't have to. We never used to require it of candidates before (see JFK and FDR), so why are we doing it now? |
You're referencing the standards of a different generation to modern day politics. 40 years ago, the public and the media also did not dig into people's personal affairs (family business, philandering, ...). Now we need to understand where the candidates are coming from. Can they relate to our problems to pass legislation that will alleviate our daily burdens and struggles to raise a family as middle class taxpayers? |
But don't you find it ironic that we spent a good deal of last night rightfully celebrating a man (Teddy) who has championed poor and working people's rights for years, but under today's "I'm more humble than thou" standards, neither he nor his brothers could get elected? |
Your DH sounds like a certain person who runs DCUM. Minus the Republican part of course. Jeff, I hope you're able to swing some VIP inaugural ball tickets. ![]() ITA, MOb is indeed fab. But my DH has been slow to warm up. He still has an "ecomonic" crush on HRC. Well, actually just Rubin and nostalgia for the Stock Market of the Clinton reign. But he is blind to Hillary's cantaloupe (gag) jacket. |
Abe Lincoln is known for his humble roots/upbringing. |
