WTF, did obama think this one up during the morning while sitting on the pot?

The fear-mongering "immigrants are going to take our jobs" is as old as America. Yet immigration has always benefitted our country.

There are already college degree jobs that are going unfilled. We import nurses from foreign countries and IT people, too. It has gotten worse and worse. And yet our lazy kids don't do the work to get those jobs.

Legal immigration has always benefited our country.
Not really. It was immigration. Doesn't matter why. People who risk everything to be here are a good bet on the whole.

PP here. Whether you happen to think immigration laws are important or not, our country has benefited from legal immigration in the past because the majority of those immigrants came here LEGALLY.

I might not vote for Obama b/c of his stance on this issue. It is time that someone put their foot down before the situation gets out of hand...if it hasn't already done so.

First: Americans are people from the whole continent of America. U.S. citizens should say North American.
Second:If you want to get the job, follow the immigrant example, LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE and open your mind to the world.

Wow, surprisingly, you are totally wrong.

For most of our early history, there was no immigration law. Then in 1875 the government tried to restrict asians because they feared cheap labor. Of course none of this worked and Asians went on to build the west coast economy and our railroads.

The first global quotas only kicked in after 1921 and then got tougher after 1924. Guess what, those huge waves of Irish, Italian, and Germans had already been let in by that point.

So basically the wave of immigration that led to our world dominance post WWII was completed before any significant immigration restrictions even existed!

What he is doing seems no worse than Reagan.

ugh. No. those of us here in the U.S. view ourselves as "Americans" and frankly that is what 99% of th epeople I have ever met outside of the US call me - an "american". in fact, they refer to this country as "America" more often than the "US". Of course there is a N and S America w/ many countries included - but if you say you are an "american" it means you are a US citizen.

Hey--thanks for the little history lesson! I also appreciate your snarky sense of humor. Nonetheless, I view anyone who immigrated here without breaking the applicable laws of the time as being "legal."

Great, so we should return to the legal standard for immigration that existed in 1890. America grows and you are happy because everyone is legal.

I neither said not implied what you wrote--was just explaining what I meant. Hope you have a better week ahead!

OK so you are saying we benefitted from legal immigration, when that meant no immigration restrictions. Not sure what is left of your point.

I think the laws should be modified so that immigration will be easier; however, I think laws should be obeyed and enforced until actually changed.
