I the box kind at whole foods and I never knew I was supposed to be rinsing it... Am I doing it wrong all this time?

I don't rinse the kind from Costco (organic) and bag indicates its not necessary either - its never sandy.

Rinse it first and then I throw it in the rice cooker. Works like a charm.

I read that quinoa has a coating of naturally-occurring chemicals to make them less palatable to birds etc, and that these are mildly poisonous to humans and must be rinsed off thoroughly before cooking. A few minutes under water in a fine mesh sieve is my routine.

rinsing (and especially toasting) make it less bitter and give it a fuller flavor. I've never had any issues with it being sandy.

I've never heard that it was toxic, but the coating sure is bitter, and is pretty nasty tasting.
