...and from the mayo clinic:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/flaxseed/ns_patient-flaxseed/dsection=safety Pregnancy and Breastfeeding The use of flaxseed or flaxseed oil during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended. Animal studies show possible harmful effects, and there is little information in humans. Flaxseed may stimulate menstruation or have other hormonal effects and could be harmful to pregnancy. That's enough credibility for me, but I'm sure others will disagree away. |
|
The source is credible, but the results are equivocal. "There is little information in humans" means...there is little information in humans. Animal models don't always match human models.
|
| There is also research showing that fish oil is a better source of omega threes. |
Also equivocal. I mean, everyone can do what they they want but it's incorrect to act as if harm has been proven. (Also, both of those links had already been posted.) |

I hear ya there, but, because I am a fraidy cat, and a conformist, but I am avoiding retin A and salicylic acid, despite being one giant pimple, on the basis of even less credible evidence in humans. There are no studies even in animals about topical application of those products/chemicals, but animal studies of oral use have indicated possible harmfule effects and we all avoid them like the plague, and any doctor will tell you to. Hair dye and nail polish, same deal. Just because flax is considered "healthy" I wouldn't give it a pass. |
| meant to say, I am not using retin a or other pimple stuff even though I think there is really no conclusive evidence. There is about the same amount that there is re avoiding flax. |
That's cool! We all have to do what will help us sleep through the night, y'know? No judgment.
|
| Sorry, I am a moron, and not making my point. I meant to say that my OB told me to avoid retin a and salicylic acid (this is an issue near and dear to me because I am just acne ridden with these hormones), on the basis of studies similar to the flax studies. I think the big difference is tertagenic effect, meaning, flax has not been linked to any known tetrogens, there is just some vague mushy stuff that shows it might - what -- act as extra estrogen? what would that do, I guess increase miscarriage risk? |
|
Oh! Um. I'm sorry, I might have misunderstood -- I thought that you were just explaining your personal desire to avoid flax, and why you were making that choice. To which I say (and I repeat) that I understand; we all have to make the choices that work for us.
I've done an extremely cursory search of Pubmed and I'm not sure I've found the studies that are leading Mayo and NIH to the conclusions they're making, but I guess it has to do with flax being a phytoestrogen? I did just dig this up: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2008-10/uom-pwc102708.php |
| Retin a lover/current abstainer here -- Well, then, I don't understand how it is any different from soy, and nobody has told me to avoid soy milk or products. So, no, I am not avoiding flax. I will not avoid anything, I have decided, unless there is a clear reason I can understand to do so! taking the power back! Clearly, crazed with pg hormones today. |
|
Oy...you prompted me to look up soy, and now I see this:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/soy/NS_patient-soy/DSECTION=safety Guess what one of my favorite pregnancy snacks has been? Edamame. Now I've basically doomed my boy baby to a wonky penis...I give up. I'm going on a bread and water diet for the next four months. |
| Seriously, is there no end? I had tofu stir fry today, with flax oil!, to avoid the lunch meat sammies that sit out for hours provided by my work. I have allowed my pimples to run rampant. Yet still, still!, I have done something "wrong." What on earth are we supposed to eat? Madness, I tell you. I opt for no more knowledge. |
| The problem all along, I see, has been trying to eat healthy in the first place. See you at the bottom of a bag of Cheetos...I guarantee they have no pesky "nutrients" to worry about. |
| my cereal (which I eat about 5 days a week for breakfast) has flax seed in it. it never occurred to me that it might be unhealthy for the pregnancy... |
| I put some in my and my son's yogurt and cereal each morning...i am carrying twins and also took it while carrying and nursing my son |
